Nuts! Big Battles – Sneak Peek #3.5 : Falling Back

In our last Sneak Peek, we showed the German Platoon taking casualties and becoming Disordered after their Crisis Test.

"But what would have happened if they'd passed 0d6 and been forced to Fall Back?" I hear you cry...

Let's hit the rewind button - our Germans take a Crisis Test with 2d6 vs their Rep of 4, only this time they pass 0d6

The Germans in crisis...

This results in a Fall Back, requiring the unit to move 6"+1d6" away from the enemy. The Germans roll a 1, so they move a total of 7" away, separate the stands by 1/4" and face every other stand backwards, as below:

...and Falling Back.

Now they're really in trouble: if they're forced to take another Crisis Test, are attacked in Melee or are Overrun by a vehicle before they can Rally, they will Break. At least they didn't pass another German unit within 2" and Line of Sight while they were Falling Back, otherwise the friendly unit would have to take a Crisis Test as well...

End note: The Germans may have retreated out of rifle range (18"), but they're still within reach of the Machine Gun team (24"). If the Americans activate first next turn, they can still shoot at the Germans with the MG (1d6): they won't get the 2d6 for the Platoon's volume of rifle fire, but that 1d6 is still enough to potentially force another Crisis Test and cause the Germans to Break...

Next, we'll look at what happens when things get up close and personal in Sneak Peek #4: Melee.

  1. Just read through the Sneak peaks and I like it! I've been looking forward to a successor to my old favourite, Crossfire and this looks like it may well be it...when is it released??

    1. Whilst the mechanics are very different, NBB and Crossfire certainly approach WWII gaming in the same spirit. If you're a fan of Crossfire, I think you'll find a lot to like in NBB.

    2. This is where Greg helped a lot. I've never played or read Crossfire, FOW, Bolt Action, or other games.

  2. I'm liking the look of these. Will they cover the entire war?

    1. Not the first version, will mirror NUTS but the lists will be available for free when they come out.

    2. I'm currently working on some 10mm BEF and Jerries for France 1940 (some pictures can be seen HERE). Would it be difficult to mod the rules for this theatre?

  3. I wish more game designers would take the time and effort to put together info like you've done in the walkthru peeks. Great way to get a feel for the game to help decide if it is your cup of tea / mug of java / ice cold beer as it were.

In this case, I already know it will be a good game based on the previous experience I've had, but I'm sure all of you have seen interesting titles where there is little to no usable info about the game to help you decide before plunking down your CC.

    1. I'm lucky the Greg and Lloyd spent the time helping and that Greg is doing these.

  5. Not at all. Just a matter of tweaking organization and vehicles.

  6. I like all the examples, and am looking forward to purchasing the game! I have one question on the possibilities of FALL BACK (or an action that requires a retreat move of some kind). As I see that there is cover around in the example, or could be in other circumstances with a FALL BACK result, could there be an option to give the unit the choice to FALL BACK to available cover versus retreating to an area in the open? Or what if the unit is already in cover, and FALL BACK forces them into a much worse situation in the open?

    1. From the rules, so you can see what it actually says. Key is not being able to move forward towards enemy.

      FALL BACK
Stands are separated by a ¼” gap and facing opposite directions.
Morale is faltering and the soldiers are in retreat. The unit cannot move forward until rallied, but can move away from the enemy. It can still react.
Other Platoons within 2” and LOS to a Falling Back Platoon must take a Crisis Test (page 56).

    2. Thanks for the fast reply and clarity. In the example, the Germans could have moved to cover instead of straight back, as long as they don't get closer to the enemy. This can be a very important choice to make as to move the unit effected with FALL BACK to cover or out of line of fire, so it reduces the risk to the unit.

    3. You'll see that most units will move from cover to cover and rarely into the open.

  7. I use 28mm for everything including Crossfire. Will the ground scale be adjustable for lager or smaller figures, such as my 6mm friends, or my 28mm figures, versus let's say 15mm or 20mm
